Senior Data Engineer
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Data Engineer to join our Data Centre of Excellence.
Help evolve our data platform for the next phase of growth in analytics and AI. As a Senior Data Engineer, you will play a key role in building our modern data platform while keeping our existing data landscape running reliably.
As part of our central data team within ICT, you will work closely with our architects and stakeholders across the business to design, build, and scale data solutions that drive meaningful impact.
The Role
This is a hands-on role focused on building and maintaining the data foundations that support the organisation. You will bring your expertise and perspective to ensure solutions are practical, scalable, and effective in meeting business needs.
Our existing data platform spans a hybrid environment of on-premises SQL Server infrastructure and Microsoft Azure cloud services, including our SQL Server data warehouse, SSIS pipelines and Azure-based data integrations. Maintaining, optimising and ensuring the reliability of these assets is core to this role.
At the same time, you will help shape and deliver our future data architecture as we assess technology options and develop our roadmap, with your focus shifting progressively towards the modern platform as migration advances.
Our Team
We are Fisher & Paykel Healthcare’s central data and analytics team. We build the foundations that enable the business to make better decisions faster, delivering scalable data and AI solutions while supporting teams across the organisation.
About You
You are an experienced data engineer with a strong understanding of engineering principles who enjoys building high-quality data solutions to meet evolving business needs. You are comfortable bridging legacy and modern platforms and pragmatic about connecting technology to real business value. You contribute confidently alongside architects and enjoy mentoring others.
Key Responsibilities
- Build data solutions at global scale, bringing together data from multiple regions and source systems to serve users around the world
- Optimise SQL Server and SSIS workloads through query performance tuning, execution plan analysis, indexing strategies and improvements to ETL processing efficiency
- Support the operational health and ongoing improvement of our existing data landscape (SQL Server data warehouse, data lake and integrations), including database maintenance, monitoring, security, backup and recovery
- Investigate and resolve complex production incidents, including pipeline failures, data discrepancies and performance bottlenecks, performing root cause analysis and implementing preventative improvements
- Develop scalable, reliable, and well-documented data products that serve analytics, reporting, and emerging AI use cases
- Contribute to the development of a modern data platform (e.g. lakehouse architectures) and help lead the migration of data assets from legacy platforms
- Identify and pursue opportunities to use AI to improve and accelerate our processes and ways of working, from AI-assisted development and testing to smarter automation
- Help set and champion the team's engineering standards (code review, testing, documentation) and mentor other team members
Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated experience operating and supporting business-critical data platforms in production, including troubleshooting, incident and change management, root cause analysis and operational performance monitoring
- Advanced SQL skills, including query performance tuning, and experience with SQL Server data warehouses
- Hands-on experience developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex SSIS packages, including ETL orchestration, error handling and performance optimisation
- Experience with cloud data platforms and lakehouse architectures, including medallion-style layering and open table formats
- Strong dimensional data modelling skills and experience building ETL/ELT pipelines, including incremental loads and change data capture
- Hands-on experience with Azure data platforms (Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Factory and ADLS), including security and access management, RBAC, managed identities, service principals, PIM, networking and cross-service integration
- Proficiency in modern engineering practices, including version control (Git), CI/CD (Azure DevOps), automated testing, orchestration, and data quality monitoring
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, including working directly with business stakeholders, and experience mentoring other engineers
- Experience extracting and modelling SAP ERP data is beneficial
